Dumary Island (デュマーリ島 Dyumari Shima?) is an ancient island located off the coast of the Americas in which Devil May Cry 2 is set. The island was discovered by religious refugees from the Mediterranean regions, who were branded as heretics for continuing to believe in the old pagan gods by followers of a different religion. These people, along with runaway slaves, assimilated to form a new culture that became known as the Vie de Marli. They came to worship entities from the Demon World, and the rites performed in honor of these beings often resembled exorcisms and demon sealing ceremonies. These religions were headed by the "guardians", a clan of priests who borrowed the demonic power of their "gods" in order to protect them, their worshippers, and, as the many legends of the Vie de Marli say, even to combat enemy gods.

Several hundred years ago, the legendary demon hero Sparda appeared from the demon world to aid in exorcising an ancient evil known as Argosax The Chaos who was worshipped by a secret tribe of people among the inhabitants of Dumary Island, and was the most powerful and malevolent demon master that ever existed. Sparda used the Arcanas with the help of the Vie de Marli clan to seal the great devil, and although he was temporarily trapped within the demon world after the final battle with Argosax, he eventually returned to the human world.

In the past couple of decades, the multinational public corporation Uroboros, headed by the modern-day sorcerer/multimillionaire Arius, has begun to build their own official city along with some of their factories and an offshore oil-rig. A trivalent, combined-tower skyscraper called the "Skyscraper Sanctum" on the upper west side of the Dumary Island served as the headquarters. The pretext of being on the island was to acquire the "special ores" hidden within the island's mountains; however, their true purpose is to recover the fabled Arcanas and release Argosax, obtaining his power and rule the Earth.

StoryEdit

In ancient times, a religion arising somewhere east of the Mediterranean Ocean split into many different factions. Its disciples quickly carried it to western Asia, Europe, and North Africa. As time passed, some gods from the various sects were forgotten, others were assimilated into other religions, and still others were shunned as evil.
For one reason or another, the gods all but disappeared. What few people continued worshipping them were branded as heretics. The dissenters were forced to turn their backs on their own homelands in order to continue in their beliefs.
Venturing farther and farther away, the outcasts eventually found themselves adrift in an unknown land floating on the outskirts of the New World. This was Dumary Island.
Hordes of refugees of different races, beliefs and languages crossed over to the island. The first to arrive followed the sea routes of the old Viking explorers, around the North Pole and through the Pacific Ocean. Following them came runaway slaves seeking sanctuary.
The newcomers all had a single common point – belief in a pagan religion. Tribes that had historically skirmished over old differences running deep in their cultures now lived together peaceably on the same island.
As the generations passed, the former strangers blended together into a single people. Their mix of different languages, ethnic customs and various gods gave birth to new, totally unique religions.
The gods worshipped by the new blend of people were an ancient family of beings inhabiting a different dimension. They wielded strange powers and existed outside the concepts of right and wrong. Deities that were considered evil or pagan in the old world were, on Dumary Island, simply thought of as “other gods” – there were far too many of them to count. Rites performed in honor of these idols often resembled exorcisms and demon sealing ceremonies.
The priests of these cults were known as “guardians” and were sometimes called upon to protect the gods and their worshippers. Many were the legends of guardians who had borrowed the power of their own gods to defeat enemy gods. One recent tale, only a few hundred years old, told of a great swordsman appearing from “the outside” to aid in exorcising the most evil god of all time.
Over the centuries, Dumary Island’s success in supporting the worship of unique religions while maintaining its existence out of the mainstream has been nothing short of miraculous. Lately, however, agents of international corporations have quietly begun infiltrating the island. Their purpose is to acquire the “special ores” discovered in the island’s interior.
On Dumary Island, the people’s simple religious piety, as well as the fabulous artifacts buried in the inner mountains, are now in great danger...

LocationsEdit

Located upon the Dumary Island itself is an entire European-style village presided over by an immense old clocktower. A half modern, half medieval city with its own train station is located next to the village. The hidden underground catacombs built underneath the land and within its secret passages lead to the island's harbor. A more modern-looking city, now often called "Uroboros City", was built around the Uroboros Corporation's "Skyscraper Sanctum", including a factory with an underground subway station and an off-shore oil rig. Ancient, intricate, and partially flooded ruins are hidden beneath a sleepy garden within Dumary Island itself.

Vie de MarliEdit

Vie de Marli

Matier and Lucia are members of the Vie de Marli clan

The Vie de Marli clan are an ancient order of guardian priests and devil hunters from Dumary Island who were human/demon hybrids with special powers, their two most notable members Matier and Lucia. Their sole purpose in life is to defend their homeland of Dumary Island and their people from all incarnations of evil. The clan's history, along with the natives of their land, extends back to the founding of Dumary Island several thousand years ago when the island was originally discovered by religious refugees from the Mediterranean regions, who were branded as heretics for continuing to believe in the old pagan gods of ancient times when a certain religion was arising and emerging somewhere east of the Mediterranean Ocean, split into many different factions as its followers quickly carried that faith to western Asia, Europe, and North Africa.

Hordes of refugees of different cultures, beliefs and languages crossed over to the island. The first to arrive followed the sea routes of the old Viking explorers around the North Pole and through the Pacific Ocean. Following them came runaway slaves who were seeking sanctuary. Though these refugees had once belonged to tribes that had historically feuded, they were forced to assimilate in the new land, and as the generations passed with peaceable cohabitation, their original beliefs along with their dialects, ethnic customs and superstitions blended to become new, totally unique religions. And thus the Vie de Marli was formed: the "guardians", a clan of priests who were in charge of these sects along with the peoples who then came together as a singular culture and people of Dumary Island under the same name, for them to be forever recognized by the entire Human World. And so too is the isle that is Dumary Island which has given by its guardians their name as the island's own, yet secondary, given name. They, like the peoples they protected, came to worship beings from the Demon World, and the rites performed in honor of these beings often resembled exorcisms and demon sealing ceremonies. They bore their own legendary (and recognizable) symbol of a three-pointed trident (fuscina or tridens) with a short, middle prong and incorporated into their clan and their faith. And most importantly they borrowed the demonic power of their "deities" in order to protect them and their worshippers, including, as the many legends of the Vie de Marli says, borrowing the power of their gods to combat enemy gods.

Several hundred years ago, the legendary demon hero Sparda appeared from the Demon World to aid a warrior priestess named Matier and her fellow guardians in exorcising an ancient evil known as Argosax who was worshipped by a secret tribal cult of people among the inhabitants of Dumary Island, and was the most powerful and malevolent demon master that ever existed. Sparda and the Vie de Marli clan went into battle against the devils, as well as Argosax's loyal worshippers on Dumary Island. In the end, they both used the mystical power of the island's legendary treasure, four sacred relics known as the Arcanas created by the Vei de Marli, to defeat and seal away the King of Darkness. And though he was temporarily trapped within the Demon world after the final battle with Argosax, he eventually returned to the Human world. Matier and her people the Vie de Marli, were forever grateful to their friend and ally for help rescuing their home of Dumary Island and the Earth from the tyranny of the unholy.

Since that great battle, and over the centuries, Dumary Island and all its inhabitants under the care of the Vie de Marli clan and their optimistic leader Matier, peacefully continues to thrive while they slowly but sufficiently adapted the modern ways of the outside world into their livelihood, such as business, technology, mobile transportation (automobiles and trains), science, education, and construction. Dumary Island's success in supporting the worship of unique religions while maintaining its existence out of the mainstream has been nothing short of miraculous. On the island's lower east side where the Vie de Marli clan's old village is located, the locals of Dumary Island have built a half medieval/half present day city (with roof antennas and lightning rods bearing the resemblance of the Vie de Marli symbol) there including their own train stations with light rails, a tall clock tower, and a harbor. And thus throughout many years then, they often welcome tourists and visitors into their land. But they all must becareful because not all outsiders are welcome here. But as long as Dumary Island's watchful protecters the Vie de Marli clan are still there, no harm and evil will come to the natives of the island or to other newcomers that harbors no ill will, nor poses no danger.

The Battle for Dumary IslandEdit

But now, in the past couple decades in the 20th century, the multinational public enterprise Uroboros Corp., headed by the wealthy multimillionaire Arius, has begun to build their own official city (often called "Uroboros City") along with some of their factories, an offshore oil-rig and even a trivalent, combined twin towers-skyscraper called the "Skyscraper Sanctum" on the upper east side of the Dumary Island under the pretext of acquiring the "special ores" hidden within the island's mountains; however, their true purpose is to steal the fabled Arcanas and use to them to release Argosax, obtaining his power and rule the Earth. Concerning the CEO and founder of Uroboros, Arius, it is rumored that he has a profound knowledge of archaeology and ancient civilizations. Some say that the fact that his company is digging around ancient ruins somewhere on Dumary Island and his knowledge of these old cultures are related. In fact, those rumors were true, though the Vei de Marli including already discovered that Arius actually studied the occult as well and gain his own supernatural powers from learning the ways of the dark arts (made a "deal" with the devil Argosax), thus indeed making himself a full fledge sorcerer indeed.

On their home island while they're investigating their new "visitors" the Uroboros Corporation, the Vie de Marli clan have investigated and discovered the strange going-ons and demonic attacks in their own village, such as caged skeletons of condemned criminals coming to life, simian-like beasts (Msiras and Orangguerras) besieging city streets and shadowy wraiths haunting the island's underground catacombs. The clan also have investigated that corporate "town" Uroboros City on the upper side of their island, and uncovered more unusual phenomena and terrifying secrets there, such as mutant harpies and ancient goat-like devils running amok on the city streets, secret experiments and illegal projects held in Uroboros' factories, and machines being possessed by strange phantom parasites. To them, agreedibly other than other ordinary people outside their land, underneath the facade of a legitimate multinational conglomerate and a profitable organization, Uroboros Corporation is more than a just future corporate tyranny, they are a dangerous conspiracy of ruthless men and women seeking the powers of darkness and total dominance, and their president Arius as a callous robber baron (for buying some acres on Dumary Island both legally... as well as illegally), and a power hungry madman who seeks to conquer the modern-day world.

Fortunately the Vie de Marli clan alongside their leader Matier and her daughter Lucia went to the devil hunter Dante for help, and so they did. They and their people fought back and reclaim their homeland from the evil corporate conspiracy when Dante ruined Arius' immortality-inducing ceremony by switching the Arcana Medaglia with his two-sided coin and fought the evil businessman in battle before he shot him point blank. But later, the portal to the Demon World has partially open when the towers of the Skyscraper Sanctum were hit by a beam of energy and activated and slowly moving away from the pyramid beneath them, to only become separate and the diamond block on the top of the building was no more as it may have been completely sucked into the Netherworld because of the portal was unstable. all that happened because of the ritual at the solar eclipse, even though the ceremony was incomplete. After the doorway to the dark realm was closed when Dante entered it to face the impartially-summoned Argosax, Arius suddenly came back from beyond the grave and remerged as a ferocious undead demon he had been transmutated into. Now while under the control of his "master" Argosax, he's hellbent on revenge against not only Dante for killing him, but also the one person who was his defected former "creation" Chi (X). But Lucia (now her true name) continues to face her 'creator' and sworn enemy alone. Then he went under another and yet hideous transformation into a most twisted beast whose appearance was the most unsightly of devils before facing Lucia in a destroyed rift within the citystreets. But still Lucia fought back and put this abomination to an end. And so, the corrupt madman Arius and his industrial empire Uroboros Corporation were finished. Dumary Island was free and humanity is safe. But still, the Vie de Marli's leader Matier ensured her daughter Lucia not to worry about the Son of Sparda (Dante), since he would return home, back to Earth the same way Vie de Marli's friend and brother, Sparda did!
