Echidna the She-Viper

From Devil May Cry Wiki

(Redirected from Echidna)
"You may jest, but the kindest fate I offer is to unify and spend eternity with a child of mine!"
― Echidna, Devil May Cry 4

Echidna is a giant, flying, snake-dragon demon that both Nero and Dante fight. In snake form, she resembles a giant snake with a few feathery frills around the neck and multiple eyes on the head being the only difference between its and a regular snake's appearance. However, the head "unzips" in four places down the head and this reveals Echidna as a humanoid female with glowing eyes and no lower body (or it is at least inside the snake portion) with a pair of red plumes on her head that combine to form the tongue of the snake, and can also be used as makeshift whips at close range. She can lay egg-seeds and scatters them all over the forest to act as hosts for further demons, with this she aims to create a world where demons would prosper.[1]

Nero encounters Echidna while he travels through the forest searching for a way to the headquarters. He is soon ambushed by Echidna in the Ruined Valley, but manages to escape. He later meets Echidna again who immediately tries to eat Nero wherein Nero manages to escape and defeats Echidna.

Dante encounters Echidna laying egg-seeds throughout the forest. Dante (in regular fashion) responds by kicking a bunch of them into the forest she is hovering over, which all ricochet off the trees in a complex manner that leads them to hit her. She then tries to eat Dante, but Dante forces his way out of her mouth and fights her. In the end, she is killed by Dante, who then uses the newly acquired Devil Arm, Gilgamesh to destroy her Hell Gate.

[edit] Background

Echidna, which means "she viper" in Greek, was the mother of many monsters in Greek mythology, including Cerberus and Chimera. This explains her appearance, motherly desires and her laying of Chimera Seeds.
