Shadow

Demons who have grown resistant to devil arms. By covering themselves in dark magic that they can manipulate into a variety of forms they are able to repel devil arms but they are unable to withstand fire arms. Attack with your guns until the dark magic disperses revealing their core. Once that shows up attack it until it glows red. Eventually the dark magic will return but the enemy will be unstable and attempt to force themselves into Dante and explode within. Just keep dodging until they begin to slow down and watch them explode.

Alternatively, you can wait for the Shadow to launch its 'spear' attack and then stand on the spear. After doing so, take out your handguns and fire away. Since the Shadow is in a state of shock, its core is unprotected and your bullets will hit it where it hurts. Fire enough and the Shadow will go into its Kamikaze mode and then explode. (take care to dodge its final moves) You'll get 200 extra Red Orbs for killing a Shadow this way. (does not work on Dante Must Die mode)

[edit] Tips

Handguns are your best friend.

When faced against more then 1 shadow, try to focus on one of them. If you can, it's wise to use DT early in order to get more then one to reveal their core at the same time. If you can destroy one of the shadows, your chances of winning are greatly increased.

Ifrit is a good idea against the shadow, Unless you plan to deal some insane damage quickly without relying on your speed, or you're in a confined room - it's generally better to use Ifrit.

The quickest way to finish off a shadow is to simply DT your way through with handguns equipped. Once it shows the core, use the Kick-13 combo while in DT state. If you prefer Alastor, you can use the O, O, Stinger (repeat) combo for fast results.

Nightmare B is generally a bad idea against shadows. It's only an alternative method, and turns your DT into an even less considerable option.

On DMD mode, be quick about defeating them. If you're daring to show off to your friends by completing "The Three Beasts" on DMD mode, make sure you stay well away from them while they're in DT mode. Being near them will send a spark effect that tries to hit you. If you are hit, it will deal a vast amount of damage.

Avoiding the "dive" attack is easy, but can be hard at times. (Especially on the Secret Mission "Secrets of the Reaper".) If you can't get out of the way, it's actually better to run almost below the shadow.

Waiting for the spear is an excellent method, and it may even give you a free core as a prize. Although on DMD mode, this is simply a waste of time unless you're certain you can expose the core without waiting too long.

The spike attack from the ground is easy to avoid again. If you're fighting more then 1 shadow it's best to be aware of the situation around you rather then look "at" the spikes.

[edit] Other appearances

[edit] Devil May Cry 2 novel

An alternate universe version of a Shadow demon appears as the leader of the demon rebellion against Mundus, filling in the position for the late Vergil who perished in the war. Though initially human, he can take on the form of his namesake via Devil Trigger. He appears to wear the same clothing as Dante, but black-colored.
