Kitchen SinkEdit

I figured this nav box could be used for things that kind of covered the game experience as a whole. I used a grey/blue/yellow color scheme to represent Vergil's colors and to mark them as separate from the black/red/white color of the game-specific navigation boxes. (I know I should use white/blue/black to be completely opposite but yellow was easier to read.) I'm not sure if it would mesh well with the style of the rest of the wiki, but you never know if you don't try, right? Please leave opinions if you can!

I've done my best to group them logically:

  • Gameplay: Main menu options and other on-screen representations of the gameplay
  • Techniques: Button presses
  • Items: Useable items or key items stored in the inventory
  • Environmental Objects: Interact-able structures or barriers within the environment
  • Story Elements: Story things that aren't covered by other categories.
  • Production & Staff: People, companies, and programs responsible for bringing DMC to the fans *Moved to Real Life section.*

MiscelaneousEdit

The following articles may be better served under a "miscellaneous" heading for their respective games, since their importance is so specific to their particular games. There are some items which may easily fall into both the miscellaneous category and the "Features" navigation box; such items should be included in both. Note: I left Grim Grips in the above section as well as here because it seems as if they are coming back for DmC: Devil May Cry.

I really think the DMC4 Misc section could be better organized, which is why I haven't implemented it yet. If anyone has any ideas on how to better categorize them, please suggest them!

MediaEdit

Wow, okay, there's a ton of DMC peripherals out there that I wasn't even aware of until I looked for some album covers. I think there's enough for its own navbox! It makes me feel like a bad fan... I suppose I can find some comfort knowing that some of it was only released in Japan.

Cannon TemplateEdit

This subject is considered canon, occuring after {} but before {} chronologically.
text of previous story

I felt we could use a tag like this on the Story sections for the games and media that were canon: the four games, the manga, and the anime. I feel it would really help with navigating the story, especially considering the games and media were not released chronologically. I'm sure there's a way to alter this for the DMC Manga, which is the "start" of the story, and for DMC2, the "end" of the story. I just don't know how to do that. Maybe make separate templates?

This subject is considered canon, occuring before {} chronologically.

This subject is considered canon, occuring after {} chronologically.

Seems silly to me to make separate templates just for one game. What do you think?

And then, for things that aren't canon:

This subject is considered non-canon. It does not happen within the same story line as the video games.
The state of this media as canon or non-canon is in dispute. There is either insufficient evidence to place it within the canon story, plausible explanations for inconsistancies, or non-story factors which prevent it from being included in the canon.

Pretty ColorsEdit

It was mentioned somewhere by someone that each game might deserve its own color pattern. While I'm not against using the same color scheme for all the game nav boxes, I figured I'd throw a few together and see what others thought.

Tags, Infoboxes, and Suggestions, Oh My!Edit

TagsEdit

A little image tag template:

DMC2Logo

<onlyinclude>
<imagemap>
Image:DMC2Logo.png|left|120px|Devil May Cry 2
default Devil May Cry 2
desc none
</imagemap>
</onlyinclude>

To be used at the start of every article.

DMC2Logo

Right off the bat, everyone knows what game it's from, and we don't have to constantly remind them. There is at least one issue I can forsee with this: If a subject relates to multiple games, we may have multiple such tags. In that case we could just stack them, but at risk of them detracting from the article, and additional headings within the article may still be necessary:

Obviously this is just a quick mock-up. I or someone else would have to find a way to justify the images so they're not all different sizes. (I have MSPaint! Fear me!)

InfoboxesEdit

It lays out all the pertinent information that someone would be interested in from a gaming standpoint, and leaves the rest of the page free for all the frills and embelishment of story and whatnot. A strategy section can and probably should still be included for people who are having particular difficulty in dealing with them just from the infobox hints. Such a strategy section should be exempt from the "in-world" context.

Of course the exact content of the infobox can be altered, these are just some quick things I thought should be included. For example, the "name" and the "Game(s)" sections could be swapped, putting the emphasis on the game the enemy appears in. Other ways Infoboxes like this can be utilized are possibly changing the color to indicate a different game, type of enemy, (boss or otherwise,) or importance.

Obviously this comes with some of its own problems. Such a large box will command a lot of attention, and will overwhelm small articles that just don't have a lot of other information, sich as Flambat. There is also the possibility of it being used for things that just don't have enough information to fill it out, thus being a dead weight on the page.

Areas of ImprovementEdit

Note: Since the creation of this list, a lot of work has gone into improving these areas, and they may not be as prevalent as previous.

There are currently a small handful of areas I think this wiki is seriously in need of improving:

  • Redirecting Links - This happens as a result of wiki maturation, so I'm not too concerned about it. If you click on a link that takes you to an article sub-section with the "Main article" template, change the link to direct straight to the main article. Example: Mitis Forest.
  • Over-referencing in the text - Yes, links are good, but too many and they detract from the article. It's OK to remove a link to an article if that article has been previously linked to in the text. Exceptions can and probably should be made for very long articles, where the second iteration is a long way away from the first. (This is slightly subjective, but we can all be reasonable.) Just because something appears in the article, and we have a page for it, doesn't mean it has to have a link.
    • Also, links to extremely trivial terms can be removed. Examples include individual attack names (Starfall, Vortex, etc.) if there is a preceeding link to the weapon page and/or weapon moveset; words with multiple meanings or synonyms, and the one used in-context has no connection with the article linked to, (e.g. "jump" linking to "Air Hike" or "Jump Pad"); links (usually pipe links) to out-of-wiki terms that do not directly relate to the article or term at hand, such as linking to the wikipedia page for "God Complex" on Sanctus's page.
      • If you think the final type of link is absolutely necessary to the completeness of the article, place it in a "Trivia" or "External Links" section at the bottom of the page.
  • Splitting words with links - If you want to link an article using a posessive, use piped links. Dante's looks better and reads easier than Dante's.
    • And someone once corrected my mistake and, in doing so, taught me about wiki link blending. Strange Trees becomes Strange Trees. Live and learn!
    • It should be noted that you should try to avoid linking a possessive if possible.
  • Plaigarism - If you use a reference, you should change the words in that reference, or use a quote, even if you link to the reference. No one is going to sue a wiki for describing something the same way it was written in the manual, but it's just bad writing practice. If you want to use the words straight from the manual, library file, Twitter update, etc, use quotes or a blockquote.
  • TL;DR - (too long; didn't read.) Many sections dealing with story are huge paragraphs of white-on-black text. Nothing says "boring" like a page full of white-on-black text. Sometimes this can't be helped, but I think we should try to make large, text-heavy selections smaller, or at least appear smaller by the addition of images or sub-headings.
  • Flow - A lot of sentences are choppy or aren't arranged well in context. Not really sure how to fix this one except to just change them as we come across them.

The wiki articles on avoiding common mistakes and wiki markup have been invaluable to me for referencing technical details. I like my references. They are nice.
